Road Network’s are arguably the Local Authorities largest asset. Repair and maintenance must be carried out to protect the asset to make streets safer and smoother for drivers and those on two wheels and minimise the claims made by the general public.

Trench Right are already working with a Yorkshire LA to test the existing highway prior to maintenance / resurfacing to create a record of the road make-up in order to try and eradicate the pothole problem.

Core samples are taken through the existing asphalt layers and sub-grade to a depth of approx. 450mm and are securely transported back to our UKAS Accredited Testing Lab (4642) to determine the depths and condition of the existing pavement.

To determine the possible presence of old tar each core undergoes PAK testing using a marker spray (see our page for further details https://trenchright.co.uk/our-services/pak-testing/ ) If any core shows a positive reading of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons being present within the material, further chemical analysis in accordance with ADEP guidance is carried out.

This enables the LA to know during the plaining process exactly how far down and how much material they can safely take off and how much material is contaminated and must be removed with care and disposed of by a licenced wasted disposal operator.
